Chevron Retirees Association

Metropolitan Houston Chapter

What Sets MHC Apart?

What Sets Our Chapter Apart?

You!  Like the city of Houston and its surroundings, our membership reflects the diversity and strength of the community of Chevron and its legacy company retirees and alumni. We are a mix of more recent and “seasoned” retirees who are eager to make new friends and share their experiences with their fellow alumni. We enjoy getting together with each other at a variety of fun social gatherings throughout the year and we look forward to welcoming you into our family!

Size

Everyone knows that everything is bigger in Texas, and the Metropolitan Houston chapter certainly reflects that in many ways.  Houston is the 4th largest city in the country, and our chapter was recently recognized by the CRA as The Largest Chapter at the 2023 Annual Meeting in Baltimore.

Neighborhood Luncheons

As anyone who lives in the Greater Houston area knows, we cover a lot of territory!  Large concentrations of our members live in the Katy area (west of Houston); The Woodlands and surrounding areas north of Houston; Sugarland in the southwest of Houston and in the central Houston areas.

Most chapters that cover such large geographic regions typically hold rotating luncheons in each area once a year, or a total of four luncheons per year.  We have taken a different approach and brought the luncheons to where most of our members live.  We call these “Neighborhood Luncheons” and held eight of those in 2023 and will hold twelve in 2024.

Leadership

Our chapter is recognized by the Chevron Retirees Association as a “Leadership Factory”.  Many of our current and past members have served (and currently serve) in leadership roles at the National level.  Examples include:

    • Charlie Rhoads – Past CRA President (2007-2009).
    • Glenn Ewan – Global Affiliates Vice President
    • Bill Dodge – Former Benefits Committee Chair
    • Wanda Reves – Demographics Committee Chair
    • Maree “MJ” Stone – Central Meeting Administration Committee Chair

Through their active leadership in the Chevron Retirees Association, these members help make and influence decisions and policies, as well as advocate for our members with Chevron representatives.

Outreach

We are very fortunate to have Chevron’s many Houston offices in our chapter’s area. The retiring local employees from Chevron are a great feeder pool of potential new members in our chapter.  We coordinate several initiatives to make recent retirees and current employees more aware of our chapter and encourage them to join us:

    • We reach out to new retirees and those retirees who have moved to the Houston area and introduce them to our chapter with a personalized letter.
    • We are one of the few chapters that enrolls our new members in the “Current Year Free” program, supported by CRA, so they can “try it before you buy it” for a period of time without paying dues. This helps prospective new members better understand what our chapter does and get reacquainted with their former colleagues.
    • We participate in several Chevron-sponsored events at their downtown Houston offices. Examples include the “Farmers Market”, CECOH Membership Drive and the Stages Network (formerly Boomers).

Community Service

When we were still employed, Chevron offered us many ways to give back to the community by participating in a variety of volunteer activities. This tradition continues for our members in many ways. Our chapter has chosen to focus our efforts by partnering with the Houston Food Bank.

We publicize the schedule of Chevron’s Humankind events for the Houston Food Bank so that our members can sign up.  We also provide an annual monetary donation to the Food Bank. Brian Greene, the CEO of the Houston Food Bank was our guest speaker at our 2023 Holiday Event and provided a great overview of how his organization addresses the needs in the Greater Houston community.

Scholarship

Our chapter is also proud of its 24-year history of presenting a college scholarship award to a deserving natural born, adopted or stepchild, grandchild or great grandchild of one of our members-in-good-standing.

2024 marks the twenty-fourth year that our chapter will award a college scholarship. In fact, $37,500 has been previously awarded to 22 deserving high school senior recipients. Thanks to the generous voluntary donations of our members, we are well-positioned to continue this program going forward.

Belonging

Once you become a dues-paying member of our chapter, we will send you an official Metropolitan Houston Chapter Lapel Pin. We encourage our members to wear it with pride to our various luncheons and social events and whenever they are out and about.

It may help to spark a conversation, and perhaps a new friendship, with a fellow retiree. To our knowledge, we are the only chapter in CRA that provides this symbol to recognize your membership.

Membership Directory

We provide a variety of ways for our members to keep in touch with each other.  One of the unique things we do is publish an annual Membership Directory.  Like an old-school phone book, this contains information that our members are willing to share with their fellow Chevron alumni.  For privacy reasons, this is not distributed electronically. We thank the personnel at Chevron for their support in the printing and distribution of this directory.
